Just off the West coast of Baja California lies the Valle De Guadalupe, where the modern wine world has collided with vintage Mexican character. As a result the valley has erupted with blooming vineyards producing rich, textured red wines, and savory restaurants that will make you salivate. Chef Javier Plascencia successfully created such an establishment in Finca Altozano, where you can dine al fresco.
Your eyes will smile as they glance around Finca Altozano’s open air layout. While you make your way to the rustic tables you will notice the multiple textures that produce an extraordinary ambiance. Concrete floors meet tall wooden columns drawing your gaze upwards to a tin roof. Branches and twigs are dispersed decoratively across the ceiling inviting the outdoors into the dining area. Fire logs are organically stacked in front of the open kitchen where you can watch the chefs create delectable dishes. Metal panels encompass the back walls of the kitchen adding an edgy vibe while complimenting the stainless steel finishes. As you relax in your weathered teal chair you are greeted with sweeping views of the Guadalupe Mountains meeting numerous rows of grape vines on the valley floor.
Plascencia adds to the authentic Mexican theme by developing a menu bursting with flavorful creativity. A menu that changes often to keep up with the seasonal produce. Since Baja California is known for their fresh seafood, Placencia capitalizes on this resource with a raw oyster bar, succulent grilled octopus dishes, and the best ahi tostada that I’ve had to date. However the seafood doesn’t get all the glory, because Placencia has a wide variety of tender meats that carnivores dream of. Tacos with beef tongue, beef cheeks, and lamb hold up well to the heartier dishes of duck confit, and lamb ibirria. Veggie lovers? Go with the roasted brussel sprouts and you wont be disappointed.
Finca Altozano operates a sustainable farm-to-table style restaurant by incorporating vegetables and livestock from his own ranch, and farmers in the valley. If you peruse through the restaurant you will come across the lush, green garden teeming of herbs and veggies. And, if you wander a bit further you will come across the chicken coup, pig pens, and the family of goats. The seafood comes in fresh daily from the neighboring fishermen; an array of fish, oysters, and octopus. Plascencia also delivers a drink menu true to the region with wines from the valley, and a variety of local craft beers.
Between the beautiful scenery, delectable dishes, and the perfect cocktail Finca Altozano will not only give you a delicious meal, but also an experience you won’t soon forget.
